FAQ

Questions about this tool

What changed for TDS on 1 April 2026?

The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the 1961 Act. TDS on payments other than salary is now in one section, 393, as tables (393(1) for residents, 393(3) for payments to any person), and salary is section 392. The Finance Act, 2026 kept the rates and thresholds of FY 2025-26. Forms were renumbered too: the quarterly statement is Form 140 (old 26Q) or 138 (old 24Q), and TDS certificates are Form 131 (old 16A) and 130 (old Form 16).

Is TDS worked out on the amount with GST?

No, when the GST is shown separately on the invoice: TDS is on the amount without GST. When GST isn't shown separately, it is on the whole amount.

When do I deduct TDS: on payment or on booking the invoice?

When the amount is credited to the payee's account in your books or when it is paid, whichever is first. Most businesses deduct when they book the invoice.

What if the payee has no PAN, or their PAN is inoperative?

TDS is at the higher of the normal rate and 20% (5% for purchase of goods and e-commerce payments), under section 397(2)(b), old 206AA. A PAN not linked with Aadhaar is inoperative and treated as no PAN. A lower-deduction certificate is not issued without a PAN.

When is TDS deposited, and when are returns due?

By the 7th of the next month; for March, by 30 April. Rent by individuals (old 194-IB), property purchase (old 194-IA) and payments under old 194M are deposited with Form 141 within 30 days of the end of the month. Quarterly statements are due on 31 July, 31 October, 31 January and 31 May.

What does late TDS cost?

Interest of 1% a month from when TDS should have been deducted to when it was, and 1.5% a month from deduction to deposit, each part of a month counted as a month (section 398(3)). A late statement costs ₹200 a day up to the TDS amount (section 427), and not deducting at all can mean a penalty equal to the TDS (section 448) and the expense being disallowed.

Is this tax advice?

No. The calculator applies the rates and thresholds to what you enter. Whether a payment is a contract, a professional fee or technical services, and cases such as lower-deduction certificates or payments to non-residents, need your tax adviser's judgement.
