Questions about this tool
How is working capital calculated?
Working capital = current assets − current liabilities. Current assets are cash, receivables, inventory, prepaid expenses and similar items; current liabilities are payables, short-term borrowings, accruals and similar items due within a year.
What are the current and quick ratios?
The current ratio is current assets ÷ current liabilities. The quick ratio is (cash + receivables) ÷ current liabilities, which leaves out inventory and prepaid items that are harder to turn into cash quickly.
What is non-cash working capital?
Current assets other than cash, minus current liabilities other than short-term borrowings. It shows the money tied up in running the business, apart from cash and debt.
Is higher always better?
Not necessarily. Too much working capital can mean idle cash or slow collections; too little can mean difficulty paying on time. Compare with your own history and sector.
